I am one of the 2008 graduates that went to Turtle bay Resort. Although it was only overnight it was an awsome experience. We swam, played tennis, and hung out with friends and teachers. We ate at the restraunt and danced hula at dinner. That night we went out at about, 9:00. We played a couple of games that were really fun. But after playing one of the games, we sat in a group and (if you wanted to) thank others for your time at maunawili. Most of my friends said somthing that made us all cry. It was a touching night. I wish that we could of stayed another night, but unfortunatley we couldn't. I would just like to thank our teachers, chaperones, and my friends for an awsome stay at Turtle Bay!!!
turtle bay was great! the time of my life. Also the view was great. It was a good graduation field trip.
My 6th grade end of the year field trip was to PCC and then we slept over in the cafeteria. We signed yearbooks and had water play.
This year, I had the honor of being a chaperone for the 6th graders of 2008 and got to stay over at Turtle Bay. I enjoyed every minute of it. The weather was beautiful, the students were well behaved, the food was good, watched a perfect sunset, we got to go swimming with the kids and everyone was soo appreciative of that opportunity. After returning from that wonderful experience, I told the 6th grade teachers that I would volunteer to be a chaperone EVERY year!!! Awesome Experience!!!
Turtle Bay 2008 was rejuvenating! It was nice to see the students dressed in their dinner attire, practicing their etiquette skills, and entertaining the tourists. The monk seal that decided to visit us on the beach was a welcome surprise.
I can remember going to Camp Timberline and hiking into the military bunker that was pitch black and we had to feel the walls of the cave to find our way out. Does anyone remember that trip in 6th grade?
Or can any of you recall going to Camp Erdman and Mr. Rieben taught us how to line dance to "Achy Breaky Heart"?
I was so sad when I went to Turtle Bay and had to leave. Time seemed to fly by so fast. When we first arrived, I didn't think we would be doing all the things we did. We practiced Tennis, went swimming (A LOT), and had the most delicious food you could ever imagine. Turtle Bay isn't like just a average field trip. It s something you will remember for the rest of your life, and I will remember Turtle Bay forever.
I so remember Camp Erdman in the 1970's! What a blast! The camp fires, story-telling by the group leaders, night-hunting for large sand crabs... In the cabin I stayed in, classmates told creepy stories about this spooky lady whose face was scarred up and how she continued to roam the camp site. How we all screammed when an adult came around at night and peered into our cabin through the screen window!
As for graduation day, our ceremonies were in the auditorium. I remember hanging out with classmates just outside in the grass and walkway. What an odd experience to think, "We're not to be in school together anymore. What's going to happen when I'm not with this group of kids I've grown up with?" It was erie and somber realizing this was "good-bye." We exchanged autographs and waited for the bell to ring...for our last time.
Only one classmate attended the former Windward Prep School with me, Heather O'Connell. But as soon as ninth grade came around, I found lots of old familiar faces at Kailua High School (albeit a couple-of-years older faces).
About 4.5 years ago, Kailua High School's c/o '85 celebrated its 20th year reunion. While there, us Maunawili grads were talking about our hana-bada-daze memories. Another KHS alum who grew up on the mainland commented how lucky we were to have those memories of knowing the same kids from kindergarten through high school, through class reunions. Guess us public school kids were pretty lucky after all! ; )
