My name is Dee (Oyama) Takeno. I went to Maunawili Elementary School from kindergaren to 6th grade and now I am a teacher here. I have so many fond memories of this school. I remember the 3 on 2 program with 3 teachers for 2 grades. The classes were a lot bigger back then. I remember making haupia with Ms. Ah Leong. I remember losing my lunch money in the rain gutters that lined the walkways. While I was here, they also delivered the "rocks". They were shiny and black back then and we weren't allowed to play on them.
In 6th grade, we did an Enrichment project to survey the community as to whether or not they wanted a fire station. Olomana fire station opened a few years later.
Maunawili created so many happy memories when I was a little girl and it continues to create memories as I watch our students pass through our school. My first class from Maunawili is graduating this year!
My name is Jessica Sogo. I remembered when Mr. Rieben always trying to tell me to eat green foods. I did ate celery and lettuce. Now that I've grown up, I was able to eat salad, peas, beans, artichoke, and broccoli.
My favorite memory of a particular teacher was Ms. Schultz. She was a favorite memory because she would help anyone with anything if they needed help. She also had a guessing jar of candy or some other item in the morning. If I didn't win then it wouldn't matter because the person that did win would have to share with the rest of the class. This was nice because I usually never won anything. At the end of the year she would put a bunch of items in separate piles and let us pick which pile we wanted. Ms. Schultz was probably one of the nicest teachers I had that year.
I have a favorite story that Mr. Matsushima told the class abut two great swords men in Japan. How they grew up one rich and the other not so rich. They had planed to fight and see who is the best swords man in Japan. They planed it on a beach. The one who was poor won. He won by making his foe stand in the soggy sand and then his foot got stuck also he was making him face the sun blinding him. That was my favorite story.
My name is Jacob, and my favorite memory is when Mr. Matsushima used to tell us stories about myths and legends. Two particular legends are Musashi the samurai and the Oddysey. Musashi the samurai was on a quest to be the best samurai in the world. My favorite part was when the other great samurai challenged him... of course Musashi won and became the best samurai ever. While the Oddysey was about the Greek warrior Ullyses and his many adventures. Ullyses once battled a one eyed cyclops. He killed the giant by stabbing the one eyed creature in the eye. That is why my favorite memory is of these stories told by a great teacher.
Yes I do. My favorite memory of my second grade teacher Ms. Miyashiro is when we always studied about bees. Since she loved bees and how hard they worked, that's what we studied about. She thinks bees are hard workers and second graders are too. Now that she is retired, I will always remember how much fun I had discovering about a bee's life. Whenever I see a bee, I would think about her because she was all over them. If she hadn't retired, this year's second graders would have so much fun making projects with her.
My favorite teacher is Mrs.Shinagawa. Mrs.Shinagawa let's us play games in science. Some experiments in science were roller coaster and using your 6 sense. Our roller coaster we got to make around the class room . Also we needed for partners. My partners was Lincoln, Kekoa, Cory, and I. We made one with a lope . riding a wall, and a jump into the bucket of water
Yes I do have a particular memory. The memory was when I was i kindergarten. My class had to grab a book before we read we go to lunch and put it in our desk. So one day before lunch we all grabbed books and put it in our desk. I sat by Bridget so we were very good friends. When Bridget put the books in her desk I grabbed it out and then I took it out. So we ate lunch and we had recess. Recess was always 15 minutes long unless it started to rain. If it rained they rang the bell couple times and we went back to class.
So when we came back to lunch we all grabbed our books out of our desk and we started reading. So Bridget was panicking and she said were`s my books and Mrs,Tanaka said Bridget be quiet. so Bridget started talking again and she got busted. Bridge started crying and I and everyone started lauhing. well thats my story.

My favorite memory of a teacher here at Maunawili was in second grade. My teacher was Mr.Matsushima. He was my favorite because, he would always let us play our video games and he would let us eat candy out of his candy jar. He told us so many interseting stories about old japanese ways, how the sea turned salty, and many others.
Then, I believe that it was the second quarter, when he told us that he was going to retire. We were very heart broken. But then we met the teacher that was going to replace him, his name was Mr.Towata. He was really nice and caring, but he was not as special as Mr.Matsushima. Mr.Towata was more than half japanese, so every tuesday he would teach us how to write and count in japanese. It was a very fun experiece. There is so much more to thank these wonderful teachers for, but i have no idea how to put their kindness into words. The most I can say is THANK YOU BOTH!!!
My name is Missy Keyes-Saiki. I attended Maunawili School Kindergarten – 6th grade in the late 1960s and 1970s. I have so many fond memories of Maunawili, especially of the very nurturing, safe & tranquil environment the school provided for its students. Of course, some of my favorite memories are of the Maunawili School Fun Fairs (Especially the cake walk)! Ten years ago when it came time to send my first child to elementary school, I found myself trying to find an elementary school that reminded me of Maunawili. If I had still been on Oahu, I defnitely would have wanted my children there. Today, I remain friends with classmates that I met at Maunawili so many years ago. I have always felt that Maunawili School is a gem and one of Kailua’s best-kept secrets!
Yes!, actually I do. My favorite memory was in 1st Grade. The class and I were practicing for Spring Festival, and Mr. Mcoy was our instructor. It was so funny watching Mr. Mcoy put on dredlocks bobbing his head around the room to teh song "Three Little Birds" by Bob Marley. What was even more hilarious was his face when he did it. His cheeks were popped out far from his face! We were all rolling on the ground laughing in our tie dyed shirts.
Ms. Leslie was an awesome teacher. She was my math, science, reading and health teacher. She is no longer here at Maunawili Elementary. In math we did the usual stuff. For example learn multiplication, division and how to reduce fractions. Ms. Leslie made learning math really fun. This is because she usually wouldn't yell at us for doing a simple problem wrong. Usually she would just go over the problem so we can understand how to solve it the next time. Ms. Leslie loved brownies. Every time she had brownies, she would devour the whole thing. Ms. Leslie was an awesome teacher.
As a matter of fact, I do have a favorite memory of Maunawili Elementary. This one time, in fourth grade, during math class, something really funny happened. We (the math class) were doing homework, when suddenly I snarted. In other words, I sneezed and farted at the same time. Everyone started laughing really hard. I was a little embarased, but it was funny enough to make me start laughing to. My only question is, does anybody else remember it? I sure hope not.
When Mr.Matsushima was still here, we used to have a blast! During class time when we finished our work, or our problem of the day, he used to give us cuddle-fish for doing a great job. Saddly, he retired. Whenever we were eating anything after recess, he wouldn't tell us anything accept, "take your time be try to hurry before you miss story time." I have to say that P.E was always the best with him. Whether or not we didn't have shoes, he used to let us play or participate. We used to play sham battle, kick ball, turtle, dodge-ball and many more activities that I have never really heard of. Before he left, his former students as well as we have created a special bond with him. They or we all showed him many feelings about him in our own ways.
When we met the new teacher, "Mr. Towata," we kind of used to talk about only for the fact we all thought he was there to steal Mr. Matsushima's job. But you can't possibly blame us, he was our favorite teacher!!! I mean I liked him a little and all, but I liked Mr. Matsushima way better. I still miss him as my teacher! So does eveyone that used to be in his classroom!
The memory I have that was my favorite story was from this year. This story is really funny. One regular day in math class we were using the smart board. Well the smart board wasn't acting smart today. We were just listening to the lesson, my teacher made a mistake on the board so she tried to erase it, it didn't. Then a few days later, She tried to print the markings she made. She asked Mr. Reiben if she can. She pressed print and it all went blank and she screamed.
When I was in enrichment Mrs.Takeno assigned us a project where we had to pick an occupation and make a living off of our salary. I chose to be a vet and I was so pour. I remember Mrs.Takeno always laughing at me especially when I said that I could not even afford a car and I would have to catch the bus. She also laughed when I said that I would be eating from Mcdonalds everyday.
I loved attending Maunawili. Wern there in the late 60's-early 70's when Mrs. Hanson was our principal.
We had such great times there playing on the jungle gyms- chicken fighting. Fun fairs were great!! And I also loved the May Day Festival!
Mrs. Fujise was my favorite teacher.
I have such fond memories of that beautiful setting of Mt. Olomana, all the plumeria trees and shower trees and Lehua trees... and the cows. We had a great big field to play in too. kick ball and dodge ball- Awesome!!
I remember trying so hard to learn how to play that Ukulele in 5th grade! Auwe!! So hard!
Such wonderful, caring teachers.
Lucky we live Hawaii!!
One of my favorite memories was being a JPO. What a blast! We were pretty cool in our blue pants and white starched shirt.
